Duncan Phillips collected art. The American art critic, who was born in 1886, preferred to collect the art of North American artists from his time. He wrote essays about their paintings, he tried to understand their art and to recognize the strengths. Thereby he showed a good sense for artistic talents away from the mainstream in the first half of the 20th century. Many of them now belong to the classics of American art.
68 works by 50 artists from the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. show a cross section of the development of American art from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism.
