The 500th Anniversary of the Reformation
Five hundred years ago, on October 31, in 1517, Martin Luther posted his ninety- five theses, which argued against the misuse of indulgences within the Roman Catholic Church. In 2017, this anniversary is celebrated worldwide with different events, exhibitions and actions. Additionally, there is an extra holiday for many next week.
We searched our image archive and databases for images related to the anniversary of the Reformation. A search using the field of “95 theses” produced six relevant results. By narrowing our search to “the theses being nailed” we found eleven results. To limit the search results even further, we made use of the Advanced Search:
“Indulgence” in the title: 68
“Reformation” in the title combined with “15” at the dating: 30
“Reformation” in the title combined with “Wittenberg” over all fields: 4
“Reformation” in the title combined with “Martin Luther” over all fields: 17
“Martin Luther” in the title combined with “reformation”” over all fields: 33
“Martin Luther” in the title combined with “Worms” over all fields: 12
“Martin Luther” in the title: 766

Additionally, we searched the field “Halloween.” The search over all fields produced seven results, which ranged from Diane Arbus to Annie Leibovitz, and from William Eggleston to Christopher Wool.
