Artists at the Baltic Sea

Already at the beginning of the 20th century the flat and tender landscape of the Baltic Sea was a calm antipole to the fast and turbulent life in the city. Many artists of the Classic Modernism satisfy their desire for nativeness in Mecklenburg and Pommern and were inspired by the landscape and their residents. Especially to artists who were defamed as “degenerated”, the region became a retreat.
An exhibition in Schwerin is showing a representative overview with artworks by Marianne von Werefkin, Alexej Jawlensky, Edvard Munch, Lyonel Feininger, Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, as well as the Dadaists Hans Arp, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Kurt Schwitters and Hannah Höch.
