At the beginning of the 20th century they were the eccentric artist couple in Hamburg who broke with the conventions of the time: Richard Dehmel, poet and writer, and Ida Dehmel, art patron, founder of artistic associations and women’s rights activist. They were not only modern, unconventional lovers, but also the centre of a self-constructed Gesamtkunstwerk that surrounded them. Their house was a meeting place for artists and intellectuals.
On the occasion of Ida Dehmel’s 150th birthday and the 100th anniversary of Richard Dehmel’s death, the exhibition illuminates the couple and their network, “two people” embedded in the contemporary aesthetic and cultural context of the city.
