Image series 16 / 2021: Gilbert & George
„Living Sculptures“
With the performance “The Singing Sculpture”, 1969 to 1970, the British artist couple Gilbert & George became internationally famous. Painted in bright metallic colours, they stood for hours, usually on a table, posing in mechanical movements, singing to “Underneath the Arches” from 1932 and alternately swapping glove and walking stick. Since then, they have been staging themselves, their lives, their thoughts, feelings, refusing to separate their action art from their everyday lives. As “Living Sculptures” they embody their art, are the subject and object of their large-format collages and gridded visual worlds.
The comprehensive retrospective features 45 works by the artist collective Gilbert & George from 1971 to 2019.
