Motorways in Germany

90 years ago, the first motorway in Germany was inaugurated. It was 20 kilometres long and connected the cities of Cologne and Bonn. The “intersection-free motorway”, four lanes long and dead straight, was a reaction to the increasing car traffic and the rising number of accidents in the region. The complete motorway network in Germany measures around 13,200 kilometres: the second-longest motorway network in Europe and the fourth-longest in the world.
Michael Tewes’ photographs offer new views of the autobahn. They are the result of a six-year project, from 2014 to 2020, and show in the exhibition what remains unobserved while driving.
