Image series 23 / 2023: Early Italian Photography
Fratelli Alinari
Typical Italian motifs have remained unchanged for 150 years. The image of Italy as a place of longing in the 19th century, for example, was shaped by photographers like the Alinari brothers. Romualdo, Leopoldo and Guiseppe founded the company “Fratelli Alinari” in 1854 and always appeared as joint authors of their photographs.
A total of 90 important photographs from the years 1850 to 1880 by the Alinari brothers and other photographers such as Giorgio Sommer, Carlo Naya and Robert Macpherson show the history of the development of photography in 19th century Italy in the exhibition and invite visitors to take a photographic journey through Italy.
