Image series 30 / 2025: Steve McQueen
Film and Video Installations
In a poetic and precise visual language, British filmmaker, photographer and video artist
Steve McQueen moves between worlds, between visual art and cinema. He plays
with the audience’s expectations and deliberately misleads them through shifts in perception. In 2002, he created the two-part video and film installation ‘Caribs’
Leap/Western Deep’. The theme of ‘Caribs’ Leap’ is an event that took place in 1651, when indigenous Caribs jumped to their deaths from a cliff to escape French
colonial rule. Scenes from Grenada and falling figures are shown. ‘Western Deep’ is a nightmarish journey into the hot, loud depths of a modern-day South African gold mine.
Steve McQueen presents a new large-scale work specifically designed for the building’s architecture in the exhibition with ‘Bass,’ inspired by his interest in light, colour and sound and their influence on our physical perception of space and time.
