Image series 44 / 2025: Lisette Model in New York

After emigrating to New York in 1938, Vienna-born American photographer Lisette Model gained fame by capturing facets of urban life in New York for magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar. With an unsentimental eye, she revealed the social imbalance of society, capturing upper-class prosperity and carefree life in bars as well as the working poor on the streets. Her depictions of city life are formally carefully composed images.
Motifs from all of Lisette Model’s series of works are presented in the exhibition, and her most important groups of works from 1933 to 1959 can be seen in the comprehensive retrospective.
