He is one of the most important modern artists in Germany, the painter and draughtsman Lovis Corinth. His visual language referred both to traditional subjects such as biblical or mythological scenes and to portraits, landscapes and still lifes. A special feature of his work is the large number of self-portraits. Around 1898, at the age of about 40, he began to paint a self-portrait every year. Drawings and prints accompanied his self-observations.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Lovis Corinth’s death, the exhibition shows the history of his art-historical classification and public perception in eleven thematically structured chapters.
