Maurice de Vlaminck, one of the most important modern French painters, primarily developed his style in landscape painting. As a member of the Fauves around 1905, he experimented with explosive colourfulness, unmixed colours and an abstract formal language. From around 1915, he returned to expressive expression with dark colours applied directly from the tube and a gloomy atmosphere.
With the help of 73 selected exhibits, the retrospective provides a comprehensive overview of Vlaminck’s entire painterly oeuvre, with an emphasis on his productive period before the First World War.
