Distinctive Visual Language

In the early 20th century, starting in 1906, Swiss painter Alice Bailly developed a distinctive visual language between abstraction and representational art, influenced by Fauvism, Cubism and Futurism. In her colourful wool paintings, the ‘tableaux-laine’, she used threads instead of brushstrokes, combining movement, light and textile art and highlighting the connection between art and craftsmanship, which was hardly noticed at the time.
Oil paintings, works on paper and her ‘tableaux-laine’ from the oeuvre of Alice Bailly open up a new perspective on the work of an artist who early on claimed her right as a woman to be an equal part of modernism.
