Typical Half-timbered Houses

Bernd and Hilla Becher worked together as artists since 1957. Their photographic work is characterised by a factual, documentary visual language combined with a methodical approach. In the late 1950s, they began photographing the half-timbered houses typical of the Siegerland region in order to document the condition of the buildings at that time and highlight their characteristic features. Their ‘typologies’ clearly reveal similarities and differences.
With over 300 original black-and-white photographs and supplementary exhibits, the exhibition highlights the diversity and depth of Bernd and Hilla Becher’s work in terms of both content and form. Photographic compilations of coal bunkers, grain silos, conveyor and water towers, blast furnaces and cooling towers show how specific modes of representation, systematic order and variation become artistic statements.
