Image series 17 / 2026: Marisol
Life-size Wooden Figures
The wooden sculptures, the trademark of the US artist of Venezuelan origin María Sol Escobar, known as Marisol, are up to two metres tall. They are individually enhanced with various materials such as fabrics, paints, photographs or everyday objects, and often feature motifs from Latin American folk art, which the artist incorporates into her work. Her themes include flight and migration, gender discrimination and the environment. Although she was a star in the 1960s, she has now been almost completely forgotten.
Around 100 works, including sculptures and objects, works on paper, photographs, and selected films and archive materials, bring Marisol’s oeuvre—spanning five decades of creative work—back to life in this exhibition.
