Journeys between Worlds

Throughout history and across many cultures, people have sought to explain the world and have attempted to influence their fate, which is determined by higher powers. To this end, shamans enter a trance and, as intermediaries between humans and spirits – guided and protected by helper spirits – journey into the otherworld to aid their community.
The 9,000-year-old discovery of the Bad Dürrenberg shaman in Saxony-Anhalt, made in 1934, provides a unique insight into these hidden worlds in the exhibition, which also reveals new findings about the history of the grave and the 30- to 40-year-old individual buried there.
