Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts hat der italienische Barockkünstler Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione ein besonderes Verfahren der manuellen Bilderzeugung angewandt, die Monotypie, eine Mischung aus Zeichnung und Druckgrafik. Das Motiv wird mit Farbe auf eine glatte Oberfläche aufgebracht und dann im noch feuchten Zustand auf ein Blatt Papier gepresst. In der Regel wird dabei nur ein einziger Abdruck mit aquarellartiger Wirkung und dramatischen Hell-Dunkel-Effekten erzeugt. In seinen Drucken und Zeichnungen stellte er unter anderem einzelne Köpfe, teilweise mit orientalischen Kopfbedeckungen dar.
Anhand von rund 80 Werken auf Papier wird in der Ausstellung sein grafisches Werk in den Mittelpunkt gestellt.
