In the mid-1920s, the German camera artist Herbert List began taking photographs under the influence of the European avant-garde. He staged still lifes and surrealistic motifs in black and white, wanting to make the enigmatic and ambiguous aspects of reality visible. In his photographs from Greece, at the ruins of antiquity, he illustrated the dream of a living old world.
In the retrospective, around 240 original photographs from the period 1930 to 1965 show Herbert List’s diverse oeuvre, in addition to photographs of ancient architecture in Greece, mysterious still lifes, nocturnal street scenes, erotic images of young men, photographs of street life in Italy and Portraits of artists.
