On the fringe of society

Around the year 1900 there were many artist studios in Paris’s 18th arrondissement. The curators of an exhibition at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt describe the Montmartre of that time, situated on the outscirts of Paris, as a rural counter-world to the metropolis in the centre of Paris. The exhibition is presenting paintings and photographies, showing a life between Moulin Rouge and coffeehouses, between the poor and the outsiders.
