More Than Just a Seat

Sofas as we know them have existed since about the 16th century, consisting of a frame and upholstery. Cultural references with the sofa are numerous. It can also be seen in paintings as a furnishing object, lifestyle object and place to stay. Here, the focus can be on its materiality and design, but also on its role as a seat or as a symbol for a state of mind.
The online exhibition on the social media platform Instagram is dedicated to the sofa in a time when most people’s lives take place at home and the sofa is more than ever the pivotal point. Fifteen artists look at the sofa from different artistic perspectives.
