They were friends and pioneers of Impressionism, the famous French painter Edouard Manet and the little-known art critic and artist Zacharie Astruc. In the 1860s, Manet painted Astruc several times. From 1860, Astruc publicly defended Manet’s work. They had mutual friends, they wrote to each other and they dealt with similar themes in their art.
With around 120 exhibits, the exhibition explores themes common to Manet and Astruc. Masterpieces by Manet are presented alongside watercolours and sculptures by his artist friend.
