Some call Luxembourg’s best-known artist of the 20th century the national painter of Luxembourg. Joseph Kutter brought modernism to the country. The human figure occupies a central place in his work. He painted them expressionistically, not lifelike, with strong colours and angular lines, and sometimes not in the way his clients had imagined.
The exhibition centres on Joseph Kutter’s portraits, which he himself always regarded as his most important works, because they were where he was best able to express himself as an expressionist painter.
