The English proverb “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is familiar since the beginning of the 20th century and especially emphasizes the health benefits of apples. But like no other fruit the apple is associated with significant symbolism for centuries. Even in ancient times the golden apples of the Hesperides were symbols of life, immortality and youth. In Christian culture apples were seen as sensual and seductive fruit. They represent the human fall. Since the 11th century they are also a sign of salvation. The apple has been used as a symbol for lordly power and dignity by the medieval emperors. The orb is the globe as part of the insignia.
