No other continent has more points of contact with the sea than Europe in terms of overall size and a coastline of around 185,000 km. Nearly half of the population in the EU lives less than 50 km from the sea, mostly in urban areas along the coast.
And the coastal cities play the leading roles in the four thematic areas of the exhibition: the sea as the area of domination and trade of Europeans, its function as a border, the sea as a research resource and its exploitation.
