It is his favourite figure, the man in black trousers and white shirt, and these iconic figures have made the sculptor Stephan Balkenhol famous far beyond Germany. With the chisel he hammers the sculptures from mighty wooden trunks and sets them in colour. Traces of craftsmanship and material properties are the special charm of his mostly anonymous figures, which remain distant and enigmatic.
In addition to sculptures, reliefs, plaster models, calendar sheets, sketches and drawings are among the more than 200 works on display in the exhibition. Starting with his early sculptures and continuing to the present day, the exhibition sheds light on the intellectual and cultural-historical references in Stephan Balkenhol’s oeuvre.
