At the beginning of the twentieth century the Impressionist Max Liebermann began to portray the dynamics of human bodies in light and nature. On the Dutch coast of the North Sea he observed riders on the beach and in Hamburg and Florence he watched polo and horse-racing. The fleeting moments he captured in his works, inspired by artists such as Edgar Degas and Edouard Manet.
To illustrate the development and importance of sport as a competition and leisure pleasure in society, the exhibition presents 140 art works, historical photographs and excerpts from contemporary books and films.
