The Alhambra in Granada is probably named after the reddish color of its walls: Arabic qa’lat al-Hamra’ (Red Castle). The castle complex, which is about 740 meters long and up to 220 meters wide, is located on Sabikah Hill in the eastern part of the city. Construction began in the 9th century, then in the 14th century the Nazarite kings Yusuf I and Muhammad V built the major part of the complex and used the Alhambra as their seat of power. In 1984 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The exhibition shows how Islamic-influenced culture enriched the western Mediterranean even after the end of Muslim Spain in 1492, with decorated book pages, refined ceramics, photographs and other objects from the 15th to the 20th century.
