Inspired by the furrows in the floorboards in a hotel room, the artist Max Ernst laid paper over them in August 1925 and traced the structures with a pencil. He developed this process further, using twine, straw mesh, wire mesh, rough canvas, grained leather, shells, leaves, bread and other materials. He published 34 of these frottages in Paris in 1926. Hans Arp wrote the text for “Histoire Naturelle”.
