Western View of Ancient Japan

To this day, the coloured photographs of the Italian-British photographer Felice Beato from the 1860s continue to shape our perception of ancient Japan. He photographed landscapes, more often people performing various acts. They were mostly re-enacted photos in his photo studio with models equipped with culturally handed-down props: his Western view of a supposedly timeless country.
Woodcuts by 19th-century Japanese artists showing Western and early Japanese photographers in sometimes humorous scenes are juxtaposed with Felice Beato’s photographs in the exhibition. In addition to the more than 30 exhibits, current commentaries by Japanese citizens can be heard.
