Since the middle of the 19th century, Christmas tree baubles have been made from glass, mainly by homeworkers in Thuringia. Lauscha is considered the birthplace of glass Christmas tree decorations, which are now known worldwide. Since 2021, the “production of hand-blown glass Christmas tree decorations from Lauscha” has been included in the nationwide list of intangible cultural heritage and has been part of the worldwide intangible cultural heritage since mid-December 2023.
The exhibition shows the origins of the Christmas tree tradition and Christmas tree decorations, from the time before the invention of glass Christmas baubles to the present day.
