Dome-shaped Rooms

Until the 19th century, the term ‘planetarium’ referred to a small mechanical device for illustrating the course of the planets. Today, the term refers to dome-shaped rooms in which special projectors create the illusion of a real starry sky. Since 1923, a large number of planetariums have been built around the world.
On 9 October 1987, the Zeiss large planetarium was officially opened as one of the last representative buildings of the GDR on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the city of Berlin. It has now been placed under monumental protection by the Landesdenkmalamt Berlin.
