Moving Paintings

Above all, the film director, producer and screenwriter David Lynch saw himself as a visual artist. His paintings are characterised by unsettling and enigmatic imagery and draw on the visual language of Surrealism. The human body, broken down into its constituent parts, runs as a central theme through his art, never depicted as whole or intact. Early on, he developed a pressing need to set images in motion and conceived ‘moving paintings’ in which he combined painting and projection.
A selection of paintings, sculptures, watercolours and early short films in the exhibition illuminates David Lynch’s cross-media vision and highlights his ongoing engagement with materiality.
