Image series 38 / 2018: "Robe à la française"
Dress Form of the 18th Century
Characteristic of the “French dresses”, usually made of silk, are a front open manteau (overdress) worn over the jupe (skirt), and a plug, a triangular insert at the upper part, with which the dress was closed. In the back the silk fabric usually forms the „Watteaufalte“, typically of that time and often expiring to a train. Shirt, corset and hoop skirt were added as an undergarment.
The special exhibition focuses on a newly acquired one-piece silk dress from the 1760s made of richly patterned silk in the silhouette of a waist Andrienne, at that time a highly fashionable special form of a “robe à la française”.
