With his newly developed motif of architectural and perspective views, the Dutch artist Samuel van Hoogstraten offers endless viewing pleasure in the 17th century. The so-called ‘Doorkijkjes’ open up vistas into new spaces and landscapes and encourage close examination of the details, which seem close enough to touch.
The exhibition brings together around sixty works by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn and his pupil Samuel van Hoogstraten to illustrate the two artists’ quest for illusionistic effects that would trick the eye.
