Her leitmotifs are already visible in her early works, in which she on the one hand quotes the brightly coloured pictorial worlds of Pop Art and on the other creates a proximity to the dream and fantasy landscapes of the Surrealists. Anna Oppermann depicts complex spatial situations and prepares the step from the two-dimensional surface into the three-dimensional space. Thematically, the artist, who wanted to be perceived as an artist on an equal footing with her male colleagues, focuses on socio-political issues such as the equality of men and women, individual fears and social expectations.
The centre of the exhibition is Anna Oppermann’s ensemble “Künstler sein (Being an Artist)”, which was shown at Documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977, and another exhibition focus is on her early work as a painter.
