Dorothea Lange
On behalf of the government, some photographers traveled through the USA in the 1930s to document the devastating consequences of the Great Depression. The American documentary photographer Dorothea Lange was one of them. She photographed a wide variety of people and in her photographs emphasized the pride, strength, and need for independence of those photographed. Her entire work was characterized by her claim to teach people to see. She often condensed reality into vivid symbols of social conditions.
100 photographs by Dorothea Lange show online how versatile the socially committed artist was, who throughout her life consistently adhered to her objective, documentary style.
