Mithras, who is depicted as a bull-slayer, was a god of Persian origin whose cult was widespread throughout the Roman Empire at its height between the 1st and 3rd centuries. It was especially popular in the border provinces. The Mithras sanctuaries were called mithraea and were often built underground or carved out of rock like caves. The ceremonies did not take place in public. Today, only outlines of the cult events and the Mithraic teachings can be grasped.
Stone monuments of the Mithras cult from sanctuaries in the Roman town of Nida in the north-west of today’s Frankfurt am Main will be presented as part of the special exhibition. Together with other finds from Italy, France, Croatia, Hungary and Romania as well as the Limes area in the Rhine-Main region, they open up a new perspective on the cult of the sun god Mithras.
