The year 1839 is considered the birth year of photography, the year in which Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre publicised his invention in Paris. However, there are older photographs from Germany. Cornelia Kemp, curator of photography and film at the Deutsches Museum, recently compiled the facts on the early history of photography and discovered that the oldest photograph in the Deutsches Museum’s collections dates back to March 1837. This photograph by mineralogist and chemist Franz von Kobell shows the Frauenkirche in Munich.
In her publication “Light – Image – Experiment”, Cornelia Kemp adds an important chapter from the German-speaking world to the early history of photography, which focussed on France and Great Britain, with a tremendous depth of detail.
