François Briot's Relief Pewter, around 1600

François Briot is regarded as the main master of pewter working around 1600 in Mömpelgard, Württemberg, now Montbéliard. He worked for the Dukes of Württemberg, among others. Various household utensils were cast in pewter foundries, mainly with the help of metal moulds. One speciality is the “relief pewter” produced by François Briot. The objects are completely decorated with ornaments and small allegorical picture programmes. The Temperantia bowl features the personification of Temperance in the centre and a depiction of Minerva and the seven liberal arts.
The Franco-German exhibition commemorates 700 years of shared history, which began in 1324 when Count Ulrich III of Württemberg acquired the County of Horburg and the Lordship of Reichenweier in Alsace. The Temperantia bowl is one of the many objects on display.
