Image series 45 / 2024: Lisl Ponger
The Construction of Cultural Identity
For decades, the Austrian artist Lisl Ponger has been interested in the construction of cultural identity at the interface between art, everyday culture and ethnology. In her works, she works with clichés and stereotypes from colonial and imperial image archives, making satirical exaggerations that point to the appropriation and exploitation of other cultures.
In six chapters, the exhibition highlights Europe’s encounters with foreign cultures through more than 80 works from the late Middle Ages to the present day.
