Image series 21 / 2024: Ignacio Zuloaga
Spain around 1900
He sought the true essence of his native Spain in rites and customs, processions and costumes in which the old traditions lived on. With his depictions of heroic matadors, fiery flamenco dancers and the simple rural population, the Spanish painter Ignacio Zuloaga had a lasting influence on the image of Spain abroad around 1900 and at the beginning of the twentieth century.
In the exhibition, over eighty paintings from the period between 1890 and 1941 show the old Spain with which Ignacio Zuloaga wanted to preserve the soul of the country, and it invites visitors to rediscover the complexity of his oeuvre.
