Image series 32 / 2022: Baroque Ceiling Painting
Augsburg Palaces
Ceiling painting was an excellent medium for representation and for conveying “heavenly messages” in the 17th and 18th century. Some of the magnificent inventory in Augsburg can still be seen today, but much has been destroyed.
“Pax & Pecunia – Baroque Ceiling Painting in Augsburg Town Houses” is a cooperation project between the Chair of Art History at the University of Augsburg and the Augsburg Art Collections and Museums. Around 30 gouaches by the painter Karl Nicolai – copies of Baroque ceiling paintings in Augsburg from 1936 onwards – as well as historical photos, floor plans and other documents in the exhibition give an impression of the former splendour in the city.
