He is often celebrated as a pioneer of straight photography, the American photographer Paul Strand. This objective photography transfers the realism of painting to photography. The pictures show a strict image composition, attention to detail and no blurring. This pictorial language corresponds to the philosophy of the New Objectivity. In the 1910s, Strand explored the possibilities of capturing modern life with the camera, initially concentrating on capturing faces and scenes of people’s lives in New York City, capturing mechanically fascinating details.
The exhibition shows around 120 prints and recalls the importance of Paul Strand’s political engagement. Between formal research and social engagement, it is particularly about balancing the forces of his practice.
