Experiments with Materials, Colour and the Camera

As a painter, graphic artist, photographer and paper artist, Edmund Kesting – born in Dresden in 1892 – moved throughout his life between the various artistic styles of the 20th century. He continually reinvented himself and experimented with materials, colour and the camera. He extended painting into the three-dimensional realm by beginning to construct colourful images from paper, card and small pieces of wood. He called these compositions ‘Bildbauwerke’. In photography, he experimented with photograms, photo collages, negative montages and multiple exposures in black and white.
With more than 200 works, organised into eight chapters tracing the course of his life, the exhibition invites visitors to discover Edmund Kesting and his entire body of work.
